General information on the start-up grant

The start-up grant is an option for potential company founders who are currently receiving unemployment benefit I. It is a  Financial support for business start-ups from the Employment Agency. This grant represents does not constitute a legal obligation but is left to the discretion of the employment agency granted.

Requirements for the start-up grant

  • at least 150 days remaining entitlement to ALG I
  • Business plan with a certificate of viability
  • Personal and professional skills must be present
  • The founder is self-employed as their main occupation (min. 15h/week)

Expiry of the start-up grant

Support in the form of the start-up grant is provided in two successive phases. The first phase lasts 6 months, followed by the second phase, which lasts 9 months.

During the first phase, the founder is granted a monthly amount consisting of the previously calculated unemployment benefit I plus a subsidy of EUR 300. Assuming you were receiving unemployment benefit I of EUR 1,000 at the time of the positive decision on the start-up subsidy, you will receive a subsidy of EUR 1,300 during the first phase.

It is necessary to apply for the second phase of the start-up grant, as this is not automatically granted after the first phase. During the second phase of the start-up grant, a monthly allowance of EUR 300 is paid over a period of 9 months.

  • Curriculum vitae and proof of qualifications
  • Solid and feasible business concept
  • Detailed, positive assessment by a technical expert
  • Possibly certificate of successful participation in a business start-up training course
  • Registration of the business activity (e.g. business registration)
  • Personal and professional suitability – Curriculum vitae and proof of qualifications
  • Business plan – certificate of viability,
  • Detailed, positive assessment – Expert opinion
  • Further training – Start-up seminar
  • Administrative procedures – registration of business activities (e.g. business registration)
